On the morning of October 3rd, 2025, Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam was exonerated from his false conviction of a 1980 murder. While expecting his well-deserved freedom after being unjustly incarcerated for nearly half a century, Vedam was instead detained by ICE officers under a decades-old deportation order.

Why This Matters

Vedam has lived almost the entirety of his life in the United States. However, he was unable to apply for U.S citizenship due to being convicted and sentenced to life without parole for a crime he did not commit. This act classified the innocent as a convicted felon, nullifying any of his chances for naturalization.

After his conviction was finally overturned, Vedam was processed as an undocumented immigrant due to his immigration status issues. While the innocent man should have been fully cleared and supported by the U.S government, they instead turned their backs and sprung detention and possible deportation simply due to his immigration status, which he was unable to change because of the U.S court’s grave mistake.

Vedam is one of many suffering from the complex relationship between wrongful criminal convictions and immigration enforcement. The U.S government has served him with yet another unjust ruling, displacing him from his home once again to a place he barely knows.

What You Should Know

Legal systems sometimes cleave criminal law and immigration law even after exoneration. However, in this case, the individual has the right to appeal deportation orders. Additionally, evidence of rehabilitation, community ties, and proof of a wrongful conviction may help in the defense.

What You Should Do

If this happens within your community, support local legal advocacy groups. Staying aware is another key factor, as monitoring the status of Vedam’s case as well as other similar cases may help you or your loved ones in similar situations. Lastly, raise awareness. Public pressure on immigration courts and defenders is a crucial step in fighting back.
